The 2025 Heartland DSC Summer Event was highlighted for the second year in a row by providing another all-terrain mobility chair to a youth. The chair was awarded to a 16-year old girl from Grand Island, Nebraska who suffered a spinal injury while babysitting and the unanchored swingset they were playing on fell over. After the injury, the thing she missed most was having her independence in the outdoors and a conventional wheelchair did not provide her the opportunity to continue with her outdoor pursuits such as camping, fishing, gardening, and exploring trails. Thinking she was at the event only for the opportunity to fish, we surprised her with a mobility chair to get her back outdoors.
In addition to the gifting of the chair, summer event attendees enjoyed a great day of fishing, bbq, and camaraderie. In addition to the adults, forty-four kids were in attendance and enjoyed a successful day of fishing in the private ponds.
Heartland DSC extends thank you to the Gibson Family for once again hosting the event.
